President's Message

As we enter our 80th season of wrestling at Duke, the newly formed Friends of Duke Wrestling have outlined a new Capital Campaign aimed at helping our Blue Devils achieve their potential on the mat and in the classroom through increased participation of our alumni, parents and friends.

MISSION STATEMENT: Duke University Wrestling is committed to pursuing academic and athletic excellence while also playing a positive role in both the university and local communities. To that end, the program seeks to become a perennial top-20 finisher at the NCAA tournament with multiple ACC Champions and NCAA All-Americans, while further developing the character of our young men.

In the pages that follow, we outline our case for your support, both financially as well as participatory. Feedback from alumni and friends has been incredibly positive thus far. In order to achieve the goals outlined in our Mission Statement, it will take the efforts of our entire "team," which consists of not only our current roster of athletes and coaches, but also alumni, parents, and friends.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE AS A FRIEND OF DUKE WRESTLING?

The operative word in that question is "participate." Certainly financial support will be vital to our program achieving such lofty goals. Yet financial support is not the only way we can show the administration and the Duke community as a whole that Duke Wrestling has a lot of "friends" out there:

INCREASED PARTICIPATION: Come out and root for the Blue Devils this winter! As you will see later in this newsletter, there will be several opportunities this season by way of FDW alumni receptions to come out and not only show your support for the team, but see some old friends and make some new ones.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Understanding that financial support is critical to achieving our stated goals; the team will require an increase in capital in order to finance a second full-time assistant coach, increased recruiting efforts, travel expenditures and additional off-season competitions. By raising this capital, we are not only showing the Athletic Department that Duke Wrestling is an important institution to a large body of alumni and university donors, but more importantly that our team can be a nationally competitive program if only given the proper tools to compete (and without scholarships). For the 2007-2008 fiscal year, we have established two goals:
              1. Donor Participation: 200 total donors
              2. Total Donations: $100,000

While this is ambitious, we have not lost sight of those in the Duke Wrestling community who have given so generously in the past. The Friends of Duke Wrestling, the coaching staff, and, most importantly, the current wrestlers appreciate such tremendous generosity, especially as we recognize the team is ever more dependent on this support to achieve its pursuit of excellence.

Sincerely,

Sean Meakim, '01
